ASK YOUR AI VENDOR FOR THIS: CHAI Applied Model Card

Before your health system, practice, or organization deploys any AI chatbot, the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) recommends requesting an Applied Model Card from your vendor. Think of it as a nutrition label for AI, a standardized document that tells you what the model was trained on, how it performs across different patient populations, where it has known limitations, and what safeguards are in place.

What to ask for:

  • What data was this model trained on and who is not represented in that data?
  • Has it been tested for bias across age, race, gender, and language?
  • What happens when the chatbot doesn’t know the answer?
  • Is there a human escalation path for high-risk queries?
  • What is the uptime guarantee, and how are errors reported?

CHAI’s best practices call for at least 99.5% uptime, a toxicity rate below 0.01%, and an escalation success rate above 90% for queries the model cannot safely answer. These are not aspirational numbers; they are the consensus benchmarks agreed upon by leading health systems, AI developers, patient advocates, and researchers, including institutions such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Stanford, Mass General Brigham, Mount Sinai, and the American Nurses Association.

You have the right to ask. The Applied Model Card gives you the framework to do it.
