KBX PHX stands as a beacon of strength, community, and resilience. Founded by martial artists Jade Munroe and John Karstadt, this kickboxing gym has quickly become a sanctuary for those seeking physical fitness and a supportive and empowering community.

The Genesis of KBX PHX
Jade Munroe’s journey to Arizona is rooted in a lifelong passion for martial arts. Born and raised on the East Coast, Jade started martial arts training very young. Inspired by a friend and fellow martial artist, John Karstadt, Jade ventured west to establish a kickboxing studio that marries the rigorous discipline of martial arts with a welcoming and enjoyable environment.
“We wanted to introduce the principles of martial arts in a way that was fun and accessible, without the intimidation of competitions or tests,” Jade explains. This vision led to KBX PHX, a gym where fitness is about physical prowess and building a supportive community.

Building a Community
From the outset, the community has been at the heart of KBX PHX.
“What I’ve always loved about martial arts is the sense of family it creates. We wanted to bring that same spirit to KBX,” Jade shares. This philosophy has translated into a vibrant, inclusive community known as the KBX fam.
One member shares their experience: “When I joined KBX, I found not just a place to get fit, but a community that supports and uplifts each other. The emphasis on community is palpable from the moment you walk through the door.”
The KBX Experience

At KBK, the approach to fitness is holistic, focusing on mind, body, and overall wellness. Jade emphasizes, “It’s not just about getting in shape. It’s about adopting a lifestyle that energizes you, builds confidence, and allows you to experience life fully.”
Classes at KBX are designed to meet individuals wherever they are on their fitness journey. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced martial artist, the supportive environment ensures everyone can thrive. “We encourage a balanced lifestyle rather than extreme measures. It’s about growing stronger gradually with consistency,” says Jade.
Overcoming Challenges
KBX’s journey has not been without its hurdles. The gym opened in late 2019, just months before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. “We had to close our doors by March 2020 and move our operations online. It was a challenging time, but it also allowed us to innovate and strengthen our community,” Jade recalls.
The resilience of the KBX community was crucial during this period. Members stayed connected through online classes, outdoor workouts, and virtual events. “The support from our community was incredible. It was their encouragement that kept us going,” Jade reflects.

Giving Back to the Community
Post-pandemic, KBX PHX has become even more ingrained in the local community. They offer free self-defense and safety workshops at ASU, Mesa Community College, and the Scottsdale Senior Center. Recently, they hosted a self-defense workshop for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, part of the Paint Phoenix Purple campaign.
“Our goal is to empower people with knowledge and resources, helping them live safer, fuller lives,” Jade states. This commitment to community service underscores KBX ‘s core values.
Looking Ahead
The future looks bright for KBX PHX. Jade envisions expanding their reach by certifying instructors across the country and globally. “We want our programming and philosophy to be accessible everywhere. Imagine taking a KBX class in Kansas City or on the East Coast,” Jade envisions. Plans also include more events, retreats, and intensive training programs to unite the community. “We’re excited to spread our wings and continue growing,” Jade says.
Join the KBX PHX Family
KBX PHX welcomes everyone to try their first class for free, regardless of experience level. Classes are available for all ages, from eight to 80. “We meet you wherever you are on your journey,” Jade assures.
KBX PHX stands as a testament to the strength of the community and the spirit of perseverance. Under the leadership of Jade Munroe and John Karstadt, it continues to inspire and uplift, significantly impacting the lives of its members and the broader Tempe community.
