Housing a 27.5-inch PlaneWave telescope within a 20.5-foot domed observatory, this will be the largest telescope in the Greater Phoenix area

In the heart of Fountain Hills, Arizona, a groundbreaking initiative is underway that promises to transform the way we experience and understand the cosmos. The International Dark Sky Discovery Center (IDSDC), currently under construction, is poised to become a premier destination for astronomy enthusiasts, educators and tourists alike. With its strategic location, state-of-the-art facilities and commitment to STEM education, the IDSDC aims to inspire a deeper appreciation for the night sky and the importance of preserving it.

A Stellar Location

Fountain Hills holds the distinguished title of being the world’s 17th International Dark Sky Community, a designation awarded by DarkSky International to areas that demonstrate exceptional commitment to preserving the night sky through responsible lighting policies and public education. Its proximity to the Greater Phoenix area, home to nearly five million people, positions the IDSDC to attract a substantial number of visitors while benefiting from naturally dark skies ideal for astronomical observations.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

The IDSDC is designed to be a comprehensive 23,000-square-foot facility.

The IDSDC is designed to be a comprehensive 23,000-square-foot facility featuring several key components:

  • Dark Sky Observatory: Housing a 27.5-inch PlaneWave telescope within a 20.5-foot domed observatory, this will be the largest telescope in the Greater Phoenix area, offering unparalleled views of celestial phenomena.
  • Hyperspace Planetarium: An immersive space designed to transport visitors across the universe, providing educational and awe-inspiring experiences about the cosmos.
  • Inspiration Theater: A multipurpose auditorium with a capacity for 150 guests, intended for presentations, lectures and educational programs that delve into various aspects of space science and the importance of dark skies.
  • Immersion Zone: An interactive exhibit space equipped with educational and historical components, aiming to deepen visitors’ understanding of astronomy and the significance of preserving dark skies.

Educational Impact and Community Support

The mission of the IDSDC extends beyond stargazing; it seeks to serve as a STEM centerpiece, educating people about space sciences and the critical importance of dark skies to humans, plants and animals.

This vision has garnered support from various leaders and organizations:

  • Ruskin Hartley, Executive Director of DarkSky International, emphasized the shared goal of educating people about the wonders of the night sky and the importance of preserving dark skies.
  • Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs highlighted that the IDSDC would symbolize the state’s leadership in protecting starlit skies for future generations.
  • Former Governor Doug Ducey noted that the center represents an exciting opportunity for students and amateur stargazers, reinforcing Arizona’s commitment to STEM education.

Local organizations, such as the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce, have also expressed strong support, recognizing the center’s potential to attract residents and visitors, thereby benefiting local businesses.

Construction Milestones and Future Prospects

Slated to open in fall 2025, the $28 million facility is expected to draw visitors from across the region and beyond, offering a unique blend of educational programs, interactive exhibits and unparalleled stargazing opportunities.

The construction of the IDSDC has reached significant milestones, including the installation of a massive 38-ton dome, measuring 39 feet in diameter and 36 feet in height. This feat required a one-million-pound crane with a lifting capacity exceeding 50 tons, underscoring the project’s ambitious scale.

Slated to open in fall 2025, the $28 million facility is expected to draw visitors from across the region and beyond, offering a unique blend of educational programs, interactive exhibits and unparalleled stargazing opportunities.

Preserving the Night Sky

The establishment of the IDSDC aligns with broader efforts to combat light pollution and preserve dark skies globally. By raising awareness about the adverse effects of light pollution on ecosystems and human health, the center aims to inspire communities to adopt responsible lighting practices. This initiative not only enhances astronomical observations but also contributes to the well-being of all living organisms that rely on natural darkness.
